The Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Brazil
The Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/ Fiocruz) is the historic birthplace of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and is one of the main centers of biomedical research in Brazil. Created in 1900, the Institute conducts activities in the fields of research, technological development and innovation, providing reference services in infectious diseases and in vector control. IOC also maintains biological collections of national and international importance, preparing scientists and technicians through professional training and postgraduate education.
Dr. A Martins is researcher in public health at Fiocruz since 2008. His interests focus on vector control, insecticide resistance monitoring, molecular genetics and evolution of vectors. He is currently leading several research projects on insecticide resistance including collaborations with IPG (French Guiana) and IHMT (Portugal) in insecticide resistance and population genetics of the dengue vector and on a genome wide association study for identifying genomic markers of insecticide resistance and vector competence in Aedes aegypti with Yale University (USA). He has contributed to the organization of international workshops on insecticide resistance in Ae. aegypti , at Fiocruz, including large panels of researchers and public health officers from Latin America with the support of PAHO (Pan American Health Organization).
