University of Notre Dame (UND) is one of the few universities to regularly rank in the top 25 of America’s best colleges. The Department of Biological Sciences ( BIOS) has a long tradition of excellence in research and training in the area of tropical infectious diseases and the biology of their arthropod vectors. The UND Eck Institute for Global Health brings together a diverse group of faculty, students, and postdoctoral fellows whose research and teaching address global health needs. The Eck Institute assists to form multi-disciplinary scientific teams and enable global health training and research partnerships among institutions with shared interests in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr J Grieco and Dr N Achee are Ph.D. medical entomologists (Research Associate Professors) within the Department of Biological Sciences, where they conduct research on the epidemiology, ecology and transmission of vector-borne diseases. They both display a 30 years experience in sponsoring, coordinating and conducting training exercises and workshops on topics related to vector control and insecticide resistance. They have active collaborations with investigators at the IRD and Katsetsart University in Thailand, the University of Belize and the Belize Ministry of Health, CRISP in Mexico, NAMRU-6 in Peru as well as other research institutions, universities and ministries of health worldwide. Dr. Achee is the PI of a multicenter clinical trial sponsored by B&MGF that will generate evidence of the protective efficacy of spatial repellents for prevention of dengue human infections. Dr Grieco was the Principal Investigator of a NIH grant, focused on the discovery of novel chemistries for use in vector control through laboratory and field evaluations of Aedes spp .
