The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) team will be coordinated by Dr. D Weetman , with support from Pr. H Ranson and Dr. M Paine. LSTM has a long track record of research in vector biology. It hosts the largest concentration of medical entomologists in the UK, with a research profile that spans functional genomics of disease vectors to clinical trials, implementation research and the development of tools for the monitoring and evaluation of disease transmission. Included in state-of-art facilities for molecular research are 14 environmentally controlled rooms that house a wide range of different mosquito species; two insecticide testing laboratories and two free flying rooms for studies on insect behaviour.

LSTM leads several international vector control consortia (e.g. TDR network on insecticide resistance in African malaria vectors, 2008-2010; AvecNet FP7 call for Africa, 2011-2016) and hosts the Liverpool Insecticide Testing Establishment (LITE), led by Prof. Ranson, which provides evaluation of new insect control tools and maintains one of the largest collection of insecticide resistant mosquito populations in the world. LSTM has excellent links with innovators, policy makers and implementers ensuring that advances in approaches to reduce the transmission of vector borne diseases are translated into health improvement.  The coordinators participate in various WHO committees and regularly act as technical advisors to the WHO on insecticide resistance related project. LSTM has an excellent track record of providing training in insecticide resistance via taught courses, workshops and training of visiting staff and students, which Dr Weetman coordinates within the Vector Biology Department. Dr Weetman leads a research programme in insect vector population genetics and genomics with a particular focus on insecticide resistance evolution and mechanisms, on which he works closely with Dr. M. Paine, an insect biochemist specialist in metabolic resistance.
