Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Portugal

IHMT is a NOVA University higher education unit devoted to research, training, technical assistance, cooperation and services to the community in public health and tropical medicine. Our research capacity was recently congregated into a new research centre denoted Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM). The centre aims at tackling neglected and emerging diseases using a multidisciplinary approach, from basic biomedical research to public health policies.

Dr. J. Pinto , Medical entomology at IHMT has an established track record in field-based insecticide resistance surveys and in the study of resistance mechanisms (i.e.target-site and metabolic resistance), originally on malaria vectors (Anopheles gambiae) and more recently onAedes aegypti. We have experience in implementing, in collaboration with local health authorities and international stakeholders, research and training actions in response to arboviral outbreaks that occurred in Cape Verde (2009), Madeira Island (2012) and Mozambique (2014). These activities include mosquito monitoring, risk mapping and testing novel vector control tools.

The main research interests of the team leader, Dr. J. Pinto , focus mainly on ecological genetics and evolutionary biology of insect vectors. The team includes Dr. C.A. Sousa, a medical entomologist experienced in monitoring, surveillance and control of mosquito vectors and Gonçalo Seixas, a PhD student working on insecticide resistance inAe. aegyptiof Madeira island, Portugal.
